What Happened
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the creation of Tela Brasil (Screen Brazil), a free public streaming service, on May 30 at the Rio2C event. The platform's initial catalog contains 555 Brazilian productions, including 139 feature films, 85 medium-length films or television movies, 267 short films, and 64 series produced between 1910 and 2025. Users can access the service by logging in with an account from Gov.br, the official digital platform of the Brazilian federal government.
The Ministry of Culture and the Brazilian Communication Company (EBC) signed an agreement to add EBC’s catalog of more than 150 titles, totaling approximately 3,000 hours of content, to the platform. The federal government invested R$9 million ($1.8 million) in 2024 and 2025 to create Tela Brasil, covering content licensing, technological development, accessibility features, curation, and project management. The platform’s technology was developed by the Ministry of Culture and the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL).
Why this Matters to You
If you are a Brazilian citizen, you now have free, legal access to a curated collection of national cinema and television, which may increase your exposure to domestic cultural works. For those working in Brazil's audiovisual sector, which accounts for 0.6% of the country's GDP and generates more than 680,000 direct jobs, this new public platform could create additional distribution channels and visibility for local productions.
What's Next
The government's focus on the audiovisual sector appears to be expanding. Minister of Industry, Commerce and Services Márcio Elias Rosa stated that the audiovisual industry has been included in New Industry Brazil (Nova Indústria Brasil), the federal government’s umbrella program for industrial sector development. A working group within the ministry has identified 11 priorities for the industry's development. Minister Rosa announced that on June 17, the government will hold a seminar... to design credit lines for the audiovisual industry, which could lead to new funding opportunities for producers.
