What Happened

On April 24, 2026, more than 6,500 volunteers gathered inside the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina. Their mission was to build 10,000 beds in 24 hours for children without their own beds. Volunteers from Lowe's, Bank of America, Honeywell, and Rebuilding Together worked across 16 build lines to transform raw lumber into finished bed frames. By the conclusion of the event, volunteers had built 10,027 beds. The project utilized more than 200 miles of lumber, nearly 740,000 wood screws, 2,000 gallons of stain, and thousands of sanding discs. Teams worked in waves, performing tasks including cutting, sanding, assembling, and finishing the frames.

Why this Matters to You

If you or someone you know is struggling to provide a child with a basic bed, this event demonstrates a significant, tangible resource is being mobilized. The beds built will be distributed to more than 110 chapters of Sleep in Heavenly Peace across 36 states, which could mean faster access to aid in your community. The scale of the effort also highlights that the need is widespread; the nonprofit reports more than 140,000 children in the U.S. are currently waiting for a bed.

What's Next

The 10,027 beds built during the event will now be delivered to children in need by the more than 110 chapters of Sleep in Heavenly Peace across 36 states. This large-scale delivery effort may significantly reduce the waiting list in many areas. The success of this event could encourage similar large-scale volunteer builds in other regions.

Perspectives

“
Concerned Parents emphasize the emotional importance of child safety and comfort, noting, "I hope every child feels as safe and comfortable as mine."
“
Medical Experts warn that a lack of consistent, quality sleep causes children to "fall behind in ways that affect their health and learning."
“
Volunteers argue that the construction details are secondary to the core mission of providing "comfort, security, and hope" through a dedicated place to sleep.
